Fiat Panda

2012 Fiat Panda

Italians are trying to design the cheapest running devices since the early 30s and objective evaluation obliged to recognize their achievements in this very direction. The latest of these came in 1980 at the Geneva Motor Show with the ambition to bury the competition not only in price but also in design terms. The exterior of the Panda was made to the famous Giorgetto Giugiaro. In the early ’80s, however Mini does not look bad by the standards of its class, and as the further fate attracts buyers until today.

However, the successor to the Model 850 is hit with such a poor quality of workmanship that no practical merits and sympathetic design, not rock-bottom rates are able to compensate. In the 16 years that Panda is assembled conveyors of FIAT, ABB engineers struggle to neutralize its numerous defects and design flaws. Some of these strains were successful, others remain futile. The surprising thing is that the model is still of interest to many buyers and even primitive looking design and its dubious reputation.

Vast majority of commercially available, second-hand copies are produced after 1988 reason for this is rooted in the sentimental value that have old cars for their owners, and the simple fact that most of them are loose. After 1985 FIAT makes much effort to deal with corrosion and achieved partial success, although a final solution to the problem and not enough. Windshield and rear window of cars from all years of production leak and door locks wear out norms.

The seats in the auditorium of Panda are uncomfortable and are upholstered with cheap and outdated materials. Offered comfort is the boundary of the critical minimum, but there are clever devices such as spacious pockets, removable ashtray and decorative tailgate with adjustable in several positions. Is inadequate sound insulation level and motion hearing sounds of the engine to the gear changes. Many elements of the interior are shaken and creating real cacophony. The driving position is most comfortable and seat adjustment is true heroism. Unpleasant defective cars produced in 1993 were locking levers control the heating.

Panda is easy and manage traffic in urban pleasure. The suspension is quite solid and react to absolute pieces. His life is not very long, but the parts are cheap and easy to find. Shorten the throttle cable is typical for cars to 1988 malfunction due to brittle plastic nozzle.

The little FIAT is equipped with several engine with a displacement of 652 cm3 to 1100, including one 1,300-cc diesel. None of the units may not boast an especially high. In the first year of production of oil leaks are very normal phenomenon and operational resources often only reaches 100,000 km. After a run of 70 thousand km 843 cc motor cars produced in 1986, often “thrown” oil and coolant from the cylinder head gasket, then another 30 thousand bags sdava all mechanics. For engines with a capacity of 903 cm3 noise appears in the gas distribution mechanism. The latter is difficult to tune, but one is needed every 20,000 km. 903-cc engine creates problems with the carburetor.

Optimal balance between performance and economy circuit liter engine offers Fire. By 1993, however, the cars equipped with it and having a catalyst, often show defects in the control electronics of the fuel system.

All versions up to 1987 are known to fuel pump failures.
No less unpleasant surprises hiding gearboxes Panda. In 1986 the cars to leak oil from the output of the transmission is a natural phenomenon, but in 1993 hardly burnished sync. After mileage of 60,000 km gear include inaccurate or not “enter”. From May 1993 to install a new gearbox, which is typical spanatoto switch until the engine is warm. There are cases when the transmission range block after only 35,000 km. The machine, which is equipped modification Selecta, noisy and often shows defects in 50 thousand km.

As with almost every “Italian” Panda’s electrical system is not devoid of drawbacks. Cartridge for car ignition key to 1990 often makes jokes and does not allow the engine starts. Refuse wipers, turn signals and rear window heater. Control lights on the dashboard are also capricious and turning whenever they want. Because abnormal “mass” tail lights do not light up at full power, requires frequent replacement of bulbs. Attempts to overcome these defects were taken in 1986, 1991 and 1993 starter remains problematic piece to the end of production. From 1981 to 1986, often burning the relay at the controls. Later also refused because the motor burned out or broken terminals internal contact.

The price is undoubtedly one of the trumps Panda. Little FIAT virtually no competition in this regard. According to the Italian catalogs Schwacke mini cost at least 1,000 marks cheaper than the average for the class.

Another issue is whether the published in the German reference data is valid for the Panda prices in Europe. In the catalog they are more theoretical in nature, but experience shows that the numbers are even lower than stated.

The value of Panda melts more by leaving a showroom to such an extent that even specimens of 4-5 years only cost one third as much as new. Over time impairment renders the sale of small FIAT, because the owner can receive paltry sum for your car (Table 3). This is where the problem when buying Panda. Specimens that justify taking the risk of owning such a car, ie the last year of production, are unrealistically expensive. Others do cheat priced around 1,500 marks, but are in danger of collapse.

The only chance for buyers with limited financial resources to fall on the car saved about 2,000 marks, which will support almost out of money.

Comments from owners of the Fiat Panda

Fiat Panda

2006 Fiat Panda

Based on my experience with FIAT Punto and Palio, quite frankly I would never buy a car of this brand – problems with engine, alternator, countless broken cheap parts in the interior (shades, caps, belt, wire rack …) inconvenient location of the equipment on board (at Punto “blinker” are behind the wheel), problems with electric systems, tearing the clutch cable, high cost (for Palio 1.6 – 12 urban) and so on … I’m talking about cars that are now 10 years old.

Apparently I only drive Fiat and am very pleased. Three years go fishing and I have not changed anything on the suspension yet. The only poblem is that the car is very low. Come now and one question to the theorists: Which license to buy Bosch make items harness? (Sensors, flow meters, etc.). Fiat Bravo of New Germany’s warranty is 5 years or 500,000 km., Whichever comes first. What is the guarantee of the VW Golf 5? In mobile.de is the old Bravo and many ads € 300, but there are a lot of cars from 1500 to 2000 euros. Just can not get maintained car for € 1,500 + transport + profit tagovetsa and here it costs 1500 eur. Do not listen colleague. All cars are broken. Simply dealerships buy junk mostly scary and not so much a matter of luck mark. Good luck with your choice.

I do not know, you asked for Punto, or Panda. But to say I mind, since all (May the whole world) spit brand, and I can say something about Fiat Punto. My wife bought a car with a 1.1 engine, 55 horse, petrol, 3 years ago. So, for these years, we just changed the pot, butter, and after two years and a half driving the alternator. We made more than 30,000 without us even once left the road. We had no problem with the engine, giving 7-8 urban cost extra and fell below 5. The ride is unique and does not break easily, but finally took back right pad to make phone calls (but not much stamping).

We sold it before two months. And recently when I went to the Ford Escort, Renault Clio, Opel Corsa and the subsequent disappointment of them, and I got the Punto. Woman’s Fiat Punto was in ’98, my series is the same, but a few years old. I have already 3000 km done and I’m, and I have no problems. Not in mine, nor in its’ve had problems with the electronics or plastic innards inside the car. I took my time in the same car, only to be ’99, the air conditioner, but I want something higher.

I Panda 4×4 1, and do not stop. Categorically state that I disagree with disparagement of this car yet. Patency and is more than decent, I just put on my winch 2500lbs, and I successfully pull tracks. When driving on off-routes “big SUV”, the only problem is the water more than 40 cm, and of course the deep tracks that leave. “Lightweight” in mud and snow is an advantage.
